When “America First” Means “Free Speech Last”: Trump Reveal His True Allegiance

Freedom of speech doesn’t come with geographic or political exceptions—at least that’s what the Constitution promises us. Yet here we are, watching as the administration that championed “America First” now prioritizes deporting non-criminals whose crime is criticizing a foreign nation.

The Slippery Slope of Selective Deportation

When Trump initially promised a hardline approach to immigration, focusing on “criminals, gang members, and illegal immigrants,” many Americans nodded in approval. After all, prioritizing national security makes logical sense. But as with most government powers, once granted, they rarely stay confined to their original stated purpose.

Now we’re seeing deportations targeting individuals based on their criticism of Israel—speech that would be constitutionally protected for citizens. This isn’t just mission creep; it’s a fundamental betrayal of American principles.

Foreign Policy Trumps Constitutional Rights

James Madison warned that “the means of defense against foreign danger have always been the instruments of tyranny at home.” How prophetic those words seem today. By allowing foreign policy considerations to dictate which non-citizens get to exercise free speech, we’re establishing a dangerous precedent that treats the First Amendment as a privilege rather than a right.

The hypocrisy is particularly striking from an administration that positioned itself as a defender against globalist influences. Instead, we’re witnessing the exact opposite: American immigration policy being weaponized to silence critics of foreign nations.

Politics as Usual, Just More Transparent

Some might call this an unforced error on Trump’s part, but that gives him too much credit. This isn’t a mistake—it’s exactly what happens when politicians prioritize relationships with foreign powers over domestic principles. The only difference is that Trump’s administration is more transparent about it.

Thomas Jefferson once wrote that “eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” Today, that vigilance requires us to call out hypocrisy regardless of political affiliation. When deportation priorities shift from public safety concerns to silencing political speech, we’ve abandoned American values in service of foreign interests.

The Real Question

As Americans who value both sovereignty and liberty, we must ask ourselves: What does “America First” even mean if it includes prioritizing foreign sensitivities over our own constitutional principles? If we allow this precedent to stand unchallenged, which protected speech will be deemed deportable next?

Freedom either applies to everyone within our borders, or it ultimately protects no one.
