Christian Perspectives on Israel in Scripture and Prophecy “What is Israel?”

In responding to another post now that I have posted the research on different bible passages for as many references that refer to the main question that Zionist Christians are mislead about or misunderstand from simply not reading their bible.

Here is my Twitter response without context:
There isn’t a biblical state, country or territory of Israel. Just a tribe or family of Jacob. The "land" or nation ultimately points to eternal communion with God—a promise sealed by Jesus’ death and resurrection. To mention a couple references Isaiah, Jeremiah spoke of a future kingdom where God’s rule would extend beyond Israel to all nations (Isaiah 49:6; Jeremiah 31:31-34) He taught that the kingdom was not earthly in John 18:36 but open to all who believe (Matthew 21:43; Galatians 3:29)

Below is a fact-checked elaboration of my points, supported by Scripture and scholarly analysis:

1. Israel as a Tribal/Familial Identity, Not a Political Entity

  • Biblical Terminology: The term “Israel” first appears in Genesis 32:28 as a name given to Jacob (“He who strives with God”). His descendants are called the “tribes of Israel” (Genesis 49:28) or “children of Israel” (Exodus 1:7), emphasizing kinship. The covenantal promise was made to Abraham’s lineage (Genesis 12:1–3; 17:4–8), not a geopolitical state. The “land” (Hebrew eretz) is tied to this familial covenant, with territorial boundaries described only in the context of tribal inheritances (Joshua 13–19) .
  • Post-Exilic Shift: After the Babylonian exile, Israel’s identity centered on covenant faithfulness rather than territory. Prophets like Jeremiah redefined restoration as spiritual renewal (Jeremiah 31:31–34), not merely political return .

2. The Land Promise as Fulfilled in Eternal Communion with God

  • Typological Fulfillment: The “land” symbolically foreshadowed Christ’s kingdom. Paul interprets the Abrahamic promise as “inheriting the world” (Romans 4:13)—a global, spiritual reality. Hebrews 11:9–16 reframes the land as a “heavenly country,” with the true fulfillment being “a better resurrection” .
  • New Covenant Transformation: Jeremiah’s prophecy (31:31–34) shifts focus from physical territory to internal transformation: God’s Law “written on hearts” and universal forgiveness. Hebrews 8:6–13 explicitly applies this to Jesus’ sacrifice, which enables direct communion with God .
  • Jesus as the True Inheritance: Galatians 3:29 declares believers “Abraham’s seed” and “heirs according to promise” in Christ. The “land” thus becomes union with Christ (Ephesians 1:11–14), where “every spiritual blessing” is found .

3. The Kingdom Extending Beyond Israel to All Nations

  • Prophetic Universalism: Isaiah 49:6 explicitly broadens Israel’s mission: “I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” This rejects ethnic exclusivity, centering on God’s global redemption .
  • Jesus’ Teachings:
    • In John 18:36, Jesus contrasts His kingdom with worldly powers: “My kingdom is not of this world.” His reign is spiritual, advancing through truth and sacrifice, not force .
    • Matthew 21:43 warns Israel’s leaders that “the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits.” “People” (Greek ethnos) implies a transnational community—the Church .
  • Paul’s Theology: Galatians 3:29 erases ethnic boundaries: “If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.” Faith, not ancestry, defines covenant membership .

Conclusion

  • Israel’s identity is primarily familial, rooted in Jacob’s lineage and covenantal promises.
  • The “land” finds ultimate fulfillment in Christ, whose death/resurrection opened eternal communion with God (Revelation 21:3).
  • The kingdom’s expansion to all nations was prophesied (Isaiah 49:6) and inaugurated by Jesus, who redefined it as spiritual (John 18:36), accessible through faith alone (Galatians 3:29).
